The decision

How the choice is actually made

In practice the device is selected during your assessment and confirmed in theatre. These are the factors that carry weight.

  • The length and girth of your erectile bodies, measured during the operation rather than estimated beforehand.
  • Whether the priority is girth on inflation or a small amount of length gain as the cylinders expand.
  • Scarring from previous surgery, radiotherapy or a previous implant, which can limit where a reservoir can be placed.
  • Hand strength and dexterity, which affect how easily each pump design can be operated.
  • Whether you have had abdominal or hernia surgery, which influences reservoir placement.
  • Availability of the specific size and configuration at the time of your operation.

Be cautious of any source that names one brand as the best implant for everyone. Large registry and cohort data show both platforms performing comparably; there is no published evidence that would justify a blanket recommendation of one over the other.

Questions about choosing between them

Coloplast Titan or AMS 700 — which should I choose?

Neither device is universally better. They are both three-piece inflatable implants from established manufacturers, and they differ in cylinder material, expansion behaviour, pump design, reservoir options and antibiotic strategy. The appropriate choice depends on your anatomy, your medical and surgical history, what the surgeon finds when the erectile bodies are measured during the operation, and your own priorities. A clinic that recommends the same device to everyone is not making that assessment.

How long does a penile implant last?

A penile implant is a mechanical device and is not a permanent, lifetime device. Many men use the same implant for many years, and published series report device survival over long follow-up periods, but the figures vary by device generation, study population and follow-up length. Rather than quote a number without a source, we discuss the current published evidence with you in consultation. What matters practically is that a device may eventually need replacement and that long-term follow-up is part of implant care.

Can the device break?

Yes. Inflatable implants contain tubing, seals and a pump, and mechanical problems such as fluid leaks or pump faults can occur. This usually shows itself as difficulty inflating the device or as the erection not holding. Malleable devices have no moving parts and are not subject to mechanical failure in the same way. Any change in how the device works should be reported rather than tolerated.
